My Favorite World #16

See that way cool cat up there? That’s composer/pianist/bandleader Horace Silver. He recorded a bunch of very deep swinging albums for Blue Note in the 60s. 1Turns out he died while I was in hospital last summer, passing without me noticing. Mea culpa. He’s not one of the Major figures in jazz, but he is significant. And swinging. Been listening to him a fair bit the past few days, thanks to the serendipity of Ipodius Randomonious.

Along the way, it occurred to me that Steely Dan might have copped the intro to Rikki Don’t Lost That Number from Song for my Father by Horace Silver.

Whaddya think?

Other than that, this week, I got nuthin. You might use it til you feel better.

Still my favorite world.

yup, recall an interview w/ messers fagan and becker years ago, and horace’s name came up re: rikki. they both acknowledged the “lift”, but in their term, more like paying homage. same thing re: ellington and some other tunes they penned. clearly they have a broad palette that leans to jazz, swing and blues, especially in the st. louis way.

hope the wrist is healing. some day, you’l have to explain what put you out of commission playing wise.

I’d say, yes, but in the acceptable jazz/homage way. Love Horace Silver. Been listening to a lot of Clifford Brown and he’s all over that. Also Quicksilver, baby! Next time I’m in town I buy you a drink and we have a long rambling Miles conversation.
